This Friday night the 6th is the feast of Epiphany and the first full quarter moon of the new year.

epiphany (î-pîf´e-nê) noun
plural: epiphanies

1.Epiphany a. A Christian feast celebrating the manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi. b. January 6, on which this feast is traditionally observed.

2. A revelatory manifestation of a divine being.

3. a. A sudden manifestation of the essence or meaning of something. b. A comprehension or perception of reality by means of a sudden intuitive realization: "I experienced an epiphany, a spiritual flash that predicted the outcome of a game" (The Bagwhan).

i have gotten into arguments with other orthodox christians about this , but my father and his sister, who was the only other bjellos relative in this geographic area, made certain to me that SERBIAN christmas was january 7th not the 6th.
what do i know?
we took our tree down on the 8th.
maybe we are the true heathens,
no matter; the bet of the year goes on the 8th.

This came through Jono's work e-mail today:

"The Milan office will be closed on Friday, 6 January 2006 in observance of the Feast of the Epiphany.

"The Epiphany (which means apparition or manifestation) honors the arrival of the Magi and the first public presentation of the Baby Jesus.

"Italians believe that animals can talk on the night of Epiphany so owners feed them well. Fountains and rivers in Calabria run with olive oil and wine and everything turns briefly into something to eat: the walls into ricotta, the bedposts into sausages, and the sheets into lasagna."

Who knew?

Orthodox Christmas is definitely the 7th, by the way.

Sleeping in a bed of warm lasagna noodles is one of life's great pleasures. And certainly a religious experience.
