This story appeared on the wire services yesterday to little or no national fanfare, but should be of grave concern to those of us living in the direct downwind path of this poisonous cloud of particulate matter.
Just another wonderful gift bestowed upon us by our benevolent government for the safety and well being of Murica. Another valuable tool in the Warn Terror.
The US military plans to detonate a 700 tonne explosive charge in a test called "Divine Strake" that will send a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas, a senior defense official said.
"I don't want to sound glib here but it is the first time in Nevada that you'll see a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas since we stopped testing nuclear weapons," said James Tegnelia, head of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.
Tegnelia said the test was part of a US effort to develop weapons capable of destroying deeply buried bunkers housing nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.
By the way, I've never heard of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, but it certainly sounds Orwellian to me.

Beamis,
I think Uncle Jelly is telling you to pipe down and drink the Kool-Aid.
He eats Chinese and harbles in Spanish anyway. So, we coulda done without all the radiation, uncle j.
My "favorite" parts of the R-J article include:
(1) mention of the "Nevada Department of Administration." Is this like the "Bureau of Bureaucracy"? And the memo that contained approval for the test wasn't attributed to a named individual, just to this Bureau of Bureaucracy. "The Bureau says that there is no conflict between this explosion and state goals." Yeah, no shit?
(2) Advocates of the blast used the fact that it was taking place in a "pristine" desert area as part of their defense of the action. Yeah, well, better blow up all the pristine areas. Can't be blowin' up no already-blowed-up areas. Hell, they're already blowed up!
(3) Much of the negative reaction to Tegnelia's comments had to do not with the subject of his comments (that the test was planned) but with the possibility that his comments were "incendiary." Yeah. And this is HIS fault?
I'm with you, beamis. Times like these call for heavy drinkin'.
